Hello Congressman Wittman,
You have shown a commitment to preserving wildlife and natural habitat here in Virginia's District 1 and I've always applauded you for your bi-partisan position on protecting environment and human health.
I am very concerned with the introduction of genetically modified alfalfa into our food supply. I hope that you would be even more concerned for our state and our country.
There is a "Dear Colleague" letter drafted by Senator Leahy and Representative DeFazio, addressed to Secretary Tom Vilsack, asking him to NOT allow deregulation of Monsanto's Roundup Ready alfalfa.
Genetically-modified (GMO/GE) alfalfa threatens the very fabric of our food supply, especially dairy. (Cows eat alfalfa!)
I believe that our food and water supplies are already in serious jeopardy due to chemical contamination, pesticides and improper handling.
Keeping our agriculture as free as possible from genetic engineering is important, mainly due to the lack of conclusive research to determine safety on human and livestock health. There has been very little conclusive unbiased research to determine the safety of genetically altered foods.
Once genetically modified seeds are planted and they mature, they travel via wind, human and animal / contaminating a natural field of non GMO produce in a very short period of time.
We don't want our seed base to be manipulated or contaminated by Monsanto genetic technology. We want natural organic seeds left intact without genetic engineering contamination and the only way that is to happen is to regulate the production and distribution; and create legislation threatening criminalization of GMO seeds that contaminate non GMO seed supplies in America.
While we need more research regarding genetic engineering, that research is only helpful if it is unbiased and open to the public and affirmed by non affiliated parties.
Please oppose the deregulation of any genetically modified seed. We have no idea how genetically altered foods are going to affect our health and our own genetic makeup generations down the road.
Please sign the Dear Colleague letter written by Senator Leahy and Representative DeFazio, addressed to Secretary Tom Vilsack. You have been bi-partisan on several issues; I hope you would take this issue on as well.
I believe that if Virginia were to maintain a ban on all genetically altered agriculture, our produce and agricultural commodity would command a higher international and domestic price and would boost our state economy.
Virginia could be the state in taking the lead on banning GMO foods to ensure our health and the genetic health of future generations.
Be aware, please, Congressman Wittman of a push towards controlling our seed and nutrients supply by multinational corporations. Control over our seeds and nutrients would put global life and safety in the hands of corporations and non elected and non American entities. We can't afford that risk.
America must protect her land and citizen health. Regulating genetically modified foods is just common sense to everyone except those who will profit from producing GMO seeds and foods.
Please, Congressman Wittman, there has never been a time when independent thinking and brave action against the 'powers that be' has been more important to the future of our country and our descendents. Please protect us from the global push for control and manipulation of not only our money supply but food supply as well.
Thank you, Rob.
